How We Choose

Every guide on this site follows the same process. It is not a lab. It is a lot of careful reading, spreadsheets, and a rule that we only recommend a product when we can say specifically why.

1. Start with the decision, not the product

Before we look at a single model we write down the two or three things that actually change the experience for that category. For an air fryer that’s basket floor area and how much counter it eats; for a carry-on it’s the exact exterior dimensions and wheel type. Everything else — the extra presets, the app, the twelfth colour — goes in a “nice, not decisive” column.

2. Build a shortlist from the spec sheets

We pull the manufacturer specifications for every model that’s widely available in the US and sits in a sensible price band. Anything that fails the decisive specs is out, no matter how many stars it has.

3. Read owner reviews for patterns, not scores

Star ratings are easy to game. What isn’t easy to fake is the same complaint showing up across hundreds of long-term owners: a hinge that cracks, a coating that peels at month four, a battery that fades. We read the one-, two- and three-star reviews first and look for repeats.

4. Cross-check with people who test for a living

Where a category has serious testers — Consumer Reports, RTINGS, OutdoorGearLab and the like — we read their methodology and results and note where our shortlist agrees or disagrees with them.

5. Pick for a situation, not “the best”

There is no best air fryer. There is a best one for a couple in an apartment and a different best one for a family of five. Every pick in our guides is labelled with who it’s for, and we’d rather send you to the cheaper one than the flashier one when the difference doesn’t matter for your case.

6. Keep it current

Prices and models change. Each guide shows the date it was last checked, and we re-check the picks when a model is discontinued, a major revision ships, or readers tell us something has changed. If you spot something out of date, email [email protected] and we’ll fix it.

What we don’t do

• We don’t accept payment or free products in exchange for a recommendation.
• We don’t let affiliate commission rates decide what we pick. Some of our picks pay us nothing.
• We don’t publish “best of” lists for categories we haven’t actually researched.

How the site makes money
